This week is the less commercialised week of the year …
Quite the contrary. It’s actually the beginning of the most commercialised time of the year.
Black Friday has been invented to push Americans to spend money during one of their holiday. Specifically the day after their most famous holiday anyone in the world know about : Thanksgiving.
This holiday marks the beginning of Christmas season and is actually less commercialised than Xmas is. Thanksgiving is about family, sharing, spending time together, and food.
But not only.
Let me tell you about Thanksgiving from the point of view of an European who loves America. In this article you will learn :
The first time I was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner was when I was living in Paris. I know what you must be telling you, my friends were Americans! We were all far from home and that was an opportunity for all of us to share some time together as well as share a bit of American culture for those friends who were organising it.
Why are Americans celebrating thanksgiving?
When the founders of the United States first arrived there, they didn’t have anything to eat and didn’t know where to look for food. On the 17th century, they were welcomed by Amerindians who nicely showed them how they hunted, cultivated the earth and fished.
One year later, they were so grateful that they decided to organise a big feast to thank God, thank them and to acknowledge that without them, they might have been dead.
Therefore, Thanksgiving is a celebration for everything that has happened in the year. It is about thanking God – or life – as well as being grateful for hardships, for people and for all the good things that we received during the passed year.
I know, we all had/have to fight against Covid this year, a lot of bad things have happened and we’re all still struggling from being able to go out safely.
But keep reading, you’ll see that we have a more than one reason to celebrate this year.
It’s the same thing I’m telling you when I tell you about that first thanksgiving dinner that I had, it was a time for sharing, for forgetting what happened in the past and being grateful for what was in front of us.
What should I expect or organise if I want to celebrate Thanksgiving?
First of all, you should only use seasonal vegetables, make some famous American recipes and prepare to have some games about the American culture.
It might be an experience for us Europeans but I can assure you that once you tasted the Thanksgiving meals, you’re going to fall in love with its recipes. From pumpkin to sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce, everything is so tasteful. My favorite is the pumpkin pie.
Even if some people say that Thanksgiving is all about the turkey, I’m vegan, I will then tell you the opposite. If you follow this link, you’ll find many recipes of your favorite meals, cheesecake, turkey stuffing and many more all vegan and delicious. Proving you that it is possible to have a vegan Thanksgiving. Have a look at my article Why I Stopped Eating Corpses for further information avout why I turned vegan.
At the dinner I was invited, we all took something to share and we ate as much as we can. It was simply so delicious that I couldn’t stop eating. I ate so much that I had to lie-down half on the couch and half on the floor. If you see the pictures, which I don’t have anymore, it looks like we’re all so drunk when we’re so full!
And that’s the whole point of Thanksgiving nowadays : enjoy eating delicious things and stock up as many calories as you can to wait until Christmas. Or maybe just rehearse before Christmas.
Giving thanks to 2020
We’re going to remember those numbers. I don’t know about you but I’ve seen a lot of memes and jokes about 2020 and how we should have a look at 2021 general conditions of sale before entering it.
I think it all depends on what you’re looking at.
There is something magical about being grateful for what happened. You realise the blessings that you were receiving.
Or as Carrie Grossman – which I interviewed in my article Meditation Series : Mantras with Carrie Grossman – put it, “when we are grateful, we notice the miracles that are present in the earth.”
When you allow yourself to be grateful for what you have, you tell the universe that you want good things to happen to you. I’m not the first one to say that the one who concentrate on all the bad things that has happened to oneself only attracts the same bad vibes.
Consequently, by concentrating on the good things that has happened to me, I attract good vibes to me and then good things keep happening to me.
If I am grateful, even for the hardships, then I see life from a different perspective. I allow myself to be less affected by the problems of the earth. And then, I can serve it better and be present with people in need without being harmed by them.
And how much more will we be able to attract good things if we are grateful for a year such as 2020. We will then be able to be grateful for anything in life and then grow out of anything.
« By being grateful for who we are and all of our imperfection, that’s when grace descends upon us. Because with gratitude comes grace. »Solala Towler, teacher of Tao wisdom
Here in France, we don’t have a holiday so in my family, we’re celebrating Thanksgiving on the last Friday of novembre. Here are some of the things that I’ll be grateful for :
I am thankful for 2020 because it allowed me to work on my projects like never before when I was locked down. I had to reconnect with some family and I was here for one of them to go peacefully. I am grateful for this pandemic because animals had some time alone from us and the earth was able to breath for some weeks. I am even happy that it allowed some people to wake up and realise the damage we were inflicted the earth with. It’s hard to say it like that but some people do need strong things to happen to them before being able to realise where they were.
I am also grateful I could open yoga-meditation, drama and meditation classes. Even though we had to be locked down again here in France and couldn’t see each other anymore, we organised free online sessions. I am grateful for everyone of us and for the people who has been able to adapt to a changing world.
And I am grateful for all of you who are reading my (almost) weekly articles.
And you, what are you grateful for?
Please comment, I’d be delighted to see the gifts life had it store for you this year.
I believe challenges are here for a reason ; if only one, it is to make us grow.

“Only when we will accept our reality and feel grateful for what we have, for what is, for being, will we only be able to live in abundance.
When you recognise that you are not in peace with yourself, this recognition creates an atmosphere of calm that welcomes disagreement in a tender and loving movement and subsequently converts it into peace.
Appropriate the recognition of your inner state.”Eckhart Tolle, in his book Stillness Speaks
